Food safety is a globally concerning issue. In the United States, 4 million people are infected with foodborne illnessesevery year. In response to this, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) includes the FSMA 204 provision regarding food traceability, which will come into effect on January 20, 2026. The food industry is facing a transformative challenge.


FSMA 204 requires companies that produce, process, or sell high-risk foods to achieve digital data sharing in the supply chain. These companies need to maintain records containing key data elements and provide information to the FDA within the specified time. They also have to develop a traceability plan. Although there is no mandatory requirement for specific technologies, technologies such as barcodes and RFID can facilitate automated data collection and sharing.


The RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology has remarkable advantages and is expected to play a crucial role in compliance with FSMA 204. It can identify and track items via radio waves, with each tag having a unique identification number that can be attached to products for real-time tracking. In the food industry, RFID can automate data collection, reduce human errors, quickly obtain key data, and meet the requirements of key tracking events. It can also achieve seamless connection of all supply chain links, share and update data in real-time, enhancing transparency and traceability. With the implementation of FSMA 204, the application of RFID in the food supply chain will become more widespread. Industry groups are also actively promoting its application and formulating guidelines to assist enterprises in its implementation.
